The House of Lords. The debasement of the Aristocracy. Similarly, the Samoan Matai system debased by Aumaga ma Aualuma.
The Aristocracy are meant to have ascribed status to allow them to become House of Lords members by virtue of birthright as part of the British Landed Gentry. Conversely, normally, the House of Commons, would be meritocratically elected into office by virtue of the democratic process of being elected into Political Power. As it appears, none of the ascription nor the meritocratic acheivements for political incumbency has been achieved by any of the aforementioned House of Lords nominees whose social aggrandisement has been ascribed to them at the behest of an individual of higher authority. It appears that the House of Lords has been filled by none other than COMMONERS who are now part of the British Landed Gentry through whatever surreptitious means, which may also include Party campaigns fund donations? The House of Lords has become debased with the self aggrandisement of the political Nouvou Riche. Buying their way into Aristocracy.
In Australia, as in America, the Senate is the Australian and American equivalent of the House of Lords, and unlike the British concept of the Westminster concept of the House of Lords, the Senate are your everyday elected official by virtue of Senate election results. The British House of Lords, however, are not democratically elected officials like Commoners through the democratic process, these people are appointed into the House of Lords by virtue of their Aristocratic birthright. Recently, however, this birthright has now been bought, and besmerched by the perpetual social aggrandisement by the nouvour riche Commoners throughout British society. This debasement of the House of Lords by the nouvou riche and the political favours and rewards by friends in high places, has promoted into the permanent second estate Aristocratic class of British and therefore European society has been considered corruption by the Commoners from the House of Commons in smashing the glass ceiling of the the British Aristocracy.
In Samoa, the Samoan Afakasi and the nouvou riche Palagi had married into Samoan Matai families, and in the process had elevated their status to similar social aggrandisement as the British Political social aggrandisement of Commoners into the House of Lords status. Samoan Matai titles have been handed out according to the wealth of the Matai and his family. The Afakasi Samoans in particular were able to elevate themselves from their English or Briish Merchant Class and Beachcomber Backgrounds into becoming Samoan Matai by virtue of Miscegenation relationships with Samoan Taupou or Daughters of High Chiefs or Samoan Manaia, or sons of High Chiefs, of Samoan society. The Commoner Palagi Sailor, Missionary, beachcomber, Marine, or Soldier, would suddenly be elevated in social status, as a Samoan Aristocrat, by marrying a Samoan landed gentry.
As Samoans we can empathise with the debasement of the British House of Lords, when suddenly, there are Lords, Barons and Baronesses entering the House of Lords who were simply Commoners before their promotion.
In Australian society, however, the egalitarianism ethos, seems to venerate the knocking down of Tall Poppies, and to promote Commoners into higher social status, in that the debasement of the House of Lords is considered virtuous rather than a vice. The Commonwealth (former and current British Colonies of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and formerly the 13 Colonies of the United States) would consider the debasement of the House of Lords as virtuous and not a vice.
As a Samoan from a Matai heritage, I would consider the debasement of handing out Matai titles willy nilly to anyone with deep pockets rather than through birthright ascription to be the debasement of all the Samoan Matai structure by the Commonality by the Samoan nouvou riche and dilution of the Samoan Matai system with everyone becoming Chiefs and no more Aumaga and Aualuma remaining.
